Wealthy Trio

Wealthy Trio is a unique illuminated sculpture by Kumikaho Oshima from the series Luminous Transactions: Barbie Chronicles in Currency Boxes. Combining compressed U.S. dollar bills, Barbie imagery, plexiglass, and LED illumination, the work examines the relationship between aspiration, identity, and systems of value in contemporary society.

The composition is structured around a horizontal accumulation of currency enclosed within a luminous case. This arrangement transforms familiar monetary symbols into a visually dynamic landscape where repetition becomes both a formal and conceptual element. The layered dollar bills create rhythm and texture while evoking themes of abundance, ambition, and economic aspiration.

Three Barbie portraits emerge as central visual anchors. Their repeated presence introduces a dialogue between personal identity and social expectations, suggesting how contemporary ideals of success and self-worth are often shaped through images, cultural narratives, and systems of comparison. Oshima uses these familiar icons to explore the intersection between individual aspiration and collective imagination.

Light is fundamental to the experience of the work. The LED illumination activates the transparent structure, creating reflections that continuously shift according to the viewer’s position. These luminous effects enhance depth and transform the sculpture into a changing visual environment where value, desire, and representation appear closely interconnected.

The plexiglass enclosure functions as an active component of the artwork rather than a simple container. Transparency allows the surrounding space to become part of the visual experience, reinforcing the themes of observation, projection, and perception that run throughout the composition.

Through the juxtaposition of currency and idealized figures, Wealthy Trio reflects on how material success, beauty, and recognition circulate within contemporary culture. The repeated portraits suggest the persistence of social models, while the monetary landscape highlights the economic frameworks through which aspirations are often measured.
