Neon Capital

Neon Capital is a unique sculpture by Kumikaho Oshima from the series Dollar Dreams in Neon Barbie World. Combining layered dollar bills, plexiglass, and LED illumination, the work transforms a familiar symbol of wealth into a vibrant contemporary artwork that explores desire, aspiration, and visual culture.

The composition is dominated by an intense orange glow that immediately captures attention. Rather than functioning solely as a source of light, the illumination becomes an active component of the artwork, shaping perception and generating a powerful emotional atmosphere. The luminous environment transforms the dollar bills into a dynamic visual field where repetition becomes both decorative and symbolic.

Encased within transparent plexiglass, the currency appears suspended between object and image. The layered construction creates depth and subtle reflections that evolve according to the viewer’s position. Light interacts continuously with the surface, producing shifting visual effects that reinforce the immersive quality of the sculpture.

The repeated dollar bills evoke themes of ambition, aspiration, and value. Oshima transforms a globally recognizable financial symbol into a contemporary artistic language that examines the emotional power attached to money and desire. The work does not simply represent wealth; it explores how images associated with success circulate through contemporary culture and influence collective imagination.

The vibrant orange palette plays a central role within the composition. Traditionally associated with energy, stimulation, and movement, the color intensifies the visual impact of the sculpture while creating a sense of urgency and attraction. Through this chromatic strategy, Oshima transforms an economic symbol into an emotionally charged environment.

As a member of Studio CrazyNoodles founded by Hiro Ando, Kumikaho Oshima develops a distinctive artistic language that combines Japanese Neo-Pop aesthetics, consumer imagery, and contemporary sculptural practice. Her works frequently investigate the relationship between desire, visual seduction, and the symbolic structures that shape modern society.

Through its luminous presence, layered construction, and strong visual identity, Neon Capital exemplifies Oshima’s ability to transform everyday cultural symbols into compelling contemporary artworks. The sculpture stands as a sophisticated reflection on value, aspiration, and image culture within the broader context of contemporary Japanese Neo-Pop art.
