Elegy in Plastic

Elegy in Plastic is a unique illuminated sculpture by Kumikaho Oshima from the series Luminous Transactions: Barbie Chronicles in Currency Boxes. Combining Barbie figures, plexiglass, and LED illumination, the work transforms familiar consumer icons into a contemplative exploration of identity, memory, and contemporary visual culture.

The sculpture is built around the accumulation of multiple Barbie figures arranged within a luminous enclosure. Repetition becomes a central visual strategy, transforming individual dolls into a collective presence. Through this dense composition, Oshima examines how mass-produced images influence personal aspirations and cultural narratives.

The illuminated structure plays a fundamental role in the work’s impact. The LED glow creates shifting reflections throughout the transparent enclosure, enhancing depth while continuously altering the viewer’s perception. Light becomes an active component of the sculpture, transforming a static arrangement into a dynamic visual experience.

Rather than celebrating consumer imagery, the work encourages critical observation. The repeated figures evoke the circulation of standardized ideals of beauty and success, highlighting how cultural models are reproduced and internalized. By presenting the dolls as a collective rather than as individual characters, Oshima shifts attention toward broader questions of identity formation and social influence.

The presence of skull-inspired motifs introduces a subtle counterpoint to the playful familiarity of the Barbie figures. This contrast creates a dialogue between vitality and impermanence, aspiration and fragility. The work balances attraction and reflection, encouraging viewers to look beyond the immediate charm of the imagery.

Transparency is another key element of the sculpture. The plexiglass enclosure simultaneously reveals and protects its contents, creating a visual tension between accessibility and distance. Reflections on the surface integrate the surrounding environment into the artwork, reinforcing themes of projection, observation, and self-awareness.

As a member of Studio CrazyNoodles founded by Hiro Ando, Kumikaho Oshima develops a distinctive artistic language that combines consumer imagery, color psychology, and contemporary Japanese Neo-Pop aesthetics. Her work transforms globally recognizable symbols into sophisticated reflections on collective imagination and cultural memory.

Through its immersive luminosity, layered symbolism, and refined construction, Elegy in Plastic exemplifies Oshima’s ability to transform everyday objects into vehicles for introspection. The sculpture offers a compelling exploration of identity, aspiration, and visual consumption, making it a significant and highly collectible contemporary Neo-Pop artwork.
