Metropolis Mirage

Metropolis Mirage is a unique sculpture by Kumikaho Oshima from the series Dollar Dreams in Neon Barbie World. Combining layered dollar bills, fragmented Barbie imagery, plexiglass, and vibrant LED illumination, the work transforms familiar symbols of aspiration into an immersive contemporary Neo-Pop environment.

The circular composition immediately captures attention through its dynamic structure. Built from repeated currency elements intertwined with sculptural fragments, the artwork creates the sensation of constant movement and visual acceleration. The circular format reinforces this effect, suggesting the endless cycles of ambition, consumption, and visibility that shape contemporary urban life.

At the center of the work, fragmented Barbie elements emerge from the dense monetary landscape. Detached from a complete figure, these sculptural traces function as symbols rather than portraits, evoking ideals of beauty, aspiration, and personal projection. Their partial presence introduces a subtle tension between identity and image, inviting viewers to reflect on how contemporary culture constructs dreams of success.

The vibrant orange LED illumination plays a fundamental role in the sculpture’s visual impact. Associated with energy, stimulation, and attraction, the luminous glow transforms the layered currency into an atmospheric environment. Reflections on the plexiglass surface continuously shift according to the viewer’s position, creating an experience that extends beyond the physical object itself.

The contrast between crumpled paper currency and smooth transparent surfaces enriches the tactile dimension of the work. This interaction of materials generates depth and complexity while reinforcing Oshima’s interest in perception, value, and visual seduction. The transparent enclosure acts both as protection and as a reflective membrane that integrates the surrounding space into the artwork.

Rather than presenting a direct narrative, Metropolis Mirage explores the psychological mechanisms behind desire and aspiration. Through repetition, fragmentation, and luminosity, the sculpture examines how contemporary visual culture influences personal ambitions and collective imagination. The work transforms everyday economic symbols into a layered reflection on identity, value, and perception.

As a member of Studio CrazyNoodles founded by Hiro Ando, Kumikaho Oshima develops a distinctive artistic language that combines consumer imagery, color psychology, and contemporary sculptural practice. Her works investigate how globally recognizable symbols circulate within Japanese Neo-Pop aesthetics while maintaining strong emotional and conceptual resonance.

Through its immersive circular structure, vibrant chromatic presence, and refined craftsmanship, Metropolis Mirage exemplifies Oshima’s ability to transform familiar cultural references into sophisticated contemporary sculpture. The work stands as a compelling exploration of urban desire, economic symbolism, and the emotional architecture of contemporary visual culture.
