Aya Takano is a Japanese pop artist associated with the Superflat movement. She was born in Saitama, Japan. Aya Takano is one of the most famous artists who belongs to Kaikai-kiki, the contemporary art group led by Takashi MURAKAMI. Inspirated by various thing, from 14th Century Italian religious painting to alien evidence to MTV, Takano’s worlds are shiny and futuristic, yet soft and full of traditional and sensual imagery. Her works where female characters float and contort their waiflike bodies, convey a passionate drive toward creation. In Japan, Takano is known as such a multi-talented artist, (manga artist, illustrator, science fiction essayist etc) as regularly featured in subculture articles. In the art markets of Europe and America, her paintings and drawings are enthusiastically applaused.
Influenced by both manga and American Science Fiction, her art typically depicts large-eyed female heroines, often partially or completely nude. Known for mostly her drawings and paintings, she usually works in ink and acrylics. Drawing has also been the base for other works. She received a B.A. from Tama Art University in Tokyo.
